Practice Suggestions
Preparation
- Confirm all items are accessible for IV catheter insertion/ stabilization.
- Prepare site as per organizational policies.
- Remove protective guard in a straight outward motion.
- Do not rotate catheter hub prior to insertion.
- Confirm catheter hub is properly seated on flashback chamber.
Lower and Advance Slightly
- Lower catheter parallel to skin.
- Advance the entire catheter and needle unit slightly to ensure catheter tip is in vessel.
Advance Catheter
- Using the push-off plate, advance catheter off the needle slightly.
- Observe second flashback of blood (Catheter Flash) between the needle and catheter to confirm catheter is in the vessel.
- After confirmation, continue advancing catheter off the needle and into vessel.
- Release tourniquet.
Occlude and Stabilize Catheter
- Occlude vein distal to catheter tip to interrupt flow of blood.
- Stabilize catheter hub to prevent catheter dislodgement.
- Withdraw needle in a controlled and continuous motion.
- Passive Safety Shield automatically covers the needle bevel as it exits the catheter hub.
- Discard shielded needle immediately into sharps container.
Catheter Hub Closure
- Connect infusion line to catheter hub.
Catheter Stabilization
- Stabilize catheter and apply sterile dressing according to organizational policies.
